A more short-term objective, though, is to catalog the building blocks that can go into pattern-making. One is interactions between particles and image. Another is the interaction between particle trails and particles (birth/death rules, for example). Another is the initial distribution of particles. Another is the interactions between living particles (e.g., having particles follow one another and mimic each others' paths -- source of symmetry). I think we are still at this exploratory stage where we try to find out what is possible with this approach.
