It looks to me as if the main problem is uncoordinated structure in the feature image. If the feature image is a texture with fine-scale structure, you will be able to avoid this problem. The strangest parts are things like the eyes of the cat, where we can recognize the large-scale structure and realize that it has nothing to do with the primary image.
