Threshold the gradients to select three kinds of field
A particle with smallest gradients uses arbitrary field; the middle group uses smoother field; the particles in highest group use the real field.Hard thresholds cannot make sure the good segmentation.
Part of what is unappealing about these images is the quality of the line. The lines are too erratic and they pass too near one another. Having smoother lines (straight or curvature-controlled) and separating them would both improve matters. You could enforce separation by having basically thicker lines that you use for collision detection.
You haven't yet done a systematic study of inertia. It would be worthwhile looking at a fixed vector field and creating several images with different amounts of mass per particle. (I am assuming you use a force proportional to vector field magnitude -- if this hasn't been implemented yet, it should be.)
