What is the smoothing process for ETF? Maybe a bilateral smoothing would work. The image above doesn't look too bad to me, just confused in the areas of low gradient (which can be addressed with a more sophisticated smoothing process). I guess Kang has been more concerned with getting it right in the areas of high gradient, since in most applications the low-magnitude regions just get thresholded away.

ReplyDeleteAnother idea is to look again at what Hertzmann did to reconcile the direction field in the Illustrating Smooth Surfaces paper.
