Problems: ETF field did smooth the corners.

Another problem is that uniform regions or ramp image is not good to represent with ETF.

  1. What is the smoothing process for ETF? Maybe a bilateral smoothing would work. The image above doesn't look too bad to me, just confused in the areas of low gradient (which can be addressed with a more sophisticated smoothing process). I guess Kang has been more concerned with getting it right in the areas of high gradient, since in most applications the low-magnitude regions just get thresholded away.

  2. Another idea is to look again at what Hertzmann did to reconcile the direction field in the Illustrating Smooth Surfaces paper.
